BACHELOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) continues to change rapidly, creating new opportunities and challenges. The discipline is relatively new and areas formally thought not possible to apply computer technology continue to provide new opportunities. These two issues create insatiable global demand for human resource to work in Information and Communication Technology industry. To meet the current demand, improvements on old technology continue to occur and new areas of application are constantly discovered. These provide the following challenges: The need for a dynamic curriculum that adopts to new technology; Incorporation of all needs for a computer science graduate within reasonable time; The currently high demand for qualified computer science and ICT professionals; Coping with the current fast growing technological trends among other challenges.

Whereas various efforts have been made to address these problems, there is still shortage of up to date and relevant curriculum at both under and post-graduate level that meets the challenges mentioned in (1) above. The Department of Computer Sciences has taken these problems as a challenge. The department introduces new Courses, which integrates academic and professional training. The scope of the programme is wide and adequate for the degree level.

It is intended that upon completion of the programme the student should be able to:

Identify and apply software engineering and hardware engineering tools effectively.

Design and implement suitable computer applications, both software and hardware, and advice on such applications.

Function as a productive member of his/her profession.

Candidates must meet the Minimum University general admission criteria as stipulated in the statutes. Candidates must have passed the K.C.S.E., or equivalent examination with the following minimum grades to be considered: Mean grade C+ at KCSE plus C+ in (Math, C+ in Physics or Physical Sciences. In addition C grade in English or Kiswahili, OR Two principals one must be in (Math or Physics at “A” level and a subsidiary pass, OR Diploma with at least a credit pass in Computer Science or equivalent from a recognized institutions and has taken and passed physics at KCSE or any other level from an institution recognized by CUE or TIVET.

The programme will take FOUR academic years.A student is required to register for at least 21 CF’s and at most 30 CF’s in each of the eight semesters of study. In the first and second years of study in computer science, the student studies a mixture of compulsory computer science courses together with selected courses in mathematics and physics. These courses are intended to introduce the student to the theory of computer science as well as to provide the student with a sound grounding in areas of mathematics and physics that are important to the study of computer science. In the first year of study, the student is required to take University common CORE courses. These courses are intended to enlighten the students on how computer science interrelates with other disciplines and equip students with professional socio-political-economic skills. In the third year of study the student is able to tackle more advanced courses in Computer Science. In the fourth year of study the student can select an optional course from a list of available optional courses. There will be a compulsory course offered in year four semester two that would cover emerging topics in computer science. This will enable the student to be up to date with the technological changes in the discipline areas.      Credit transfers will be offered for those who had a credit pass in the respective units. Credit transfers may be offered upto 30% of the required course units into the programme. The courses will be offered in full-time and part-time; Lectures, discussions, practicals, print based media, online.
