The Degree in Criminology and Security Studies at Tharaka University prepares students for a wide range of professional roles in the criminal justice system, private security and investigative services, disaster management as well as in the broader social science career field. The programme examines the nature, extent, and causes of crime in various settings, the impact of crime on victims and society, and societal responses to crime at individual and community levels. Thus, the programme introduces the students to the study of crime and criminality, their theoretical associations, the investigation of crimes, the criminal processes and safeguards, adjudication by the courts; and an array of sentencing and correctional outcomes. The nature and effectiveness of criminal justice reform efforts are also examined in relation to best practices in the world. While indeed skill and knowledge gained through the programme are of great value to the police, many other professional opportunities exist for graduates outside of police-related work. Other career opportunities related to this programme are in Corrections, Social Services, Civil Society, Private Security, Juvenile Justice, and various forms of investigative services in banks, Insurance firms and other companies. It further offers students the opportunity to study offender management, vulnerability assessment, risk management, disaster recovery, modern security technologies and current security issues. The focus includes studies and experiences from within and outside our borders, and around the globe.
