BACHELOR OF ARTS IN CRIMINOLOGY AND SECURITY STUDIES

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The Degree in Criminology and Security Studies at Tharaka University prepares students for a wide range of professional roles in the criminal justice system, private security and investigative services, disaster management as well as in the broader social science career field. The programme examines the nature,extent, and causes of crime in various settings, the impact of crime on victims and society, and societal responses to crime at individual and community levels. Thus, the programme introduces the students to the study of crime and criminality, their theoretical associations, the investigation of crimes, the criminal processes and safeguards, adjudication by the courts; and an array of sentencing and correctional outcomes. The nature and effectiveness of criminal justice reform efforts are also examined in relation to best practices in the world. While indeed skill and knowledge gained through the programme are of great value to the police, many other professional opportunities exist for graduates outside of police-related work. Other career opportunities related to this programme are in Corrections, Social Services, Civil Society, Private Security, Juvenile Justice, and various forms of investigative services in banks, Insurance firms and other companies. It further offers students the opportunity to study offender management, vulnerability assessment, risk management, disaster recovery, modern security technologies and current security issues. The focus includes studies and experiences from within and outside our borders, and around the globe.

After completing this programme, graduates will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate competencies in describing and analyzing crime and its manifestations. Apply criminological thought in addressing crime related matters.
  • Get employment in social and governmental institutions established to deal with crime. Carry out research on trends of crime.
  • Theorize the emergence and manifestation of crime in society.

Any applicant who meets the minimum entry requirements for admission into the University may be admitted into this programme. Admission may be granted to Diploma holders with at least a credit or its equivalent in criminology or related areas or Police Science from recognized institutions

The B.A. Criminology and Security Studies programme shall extend for a period of eight semesters. This will be offered in the following alternative modes: Full-time mode shall run normally for a period of eight semesters. Part-time students shall attend three hour lectures in the evenings for five days in a week and a minimum of six hours in all. The part-time students shall be required to register for a minimum of six courses per semester in order to complete the degree programme in three years. Registration for Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Security Studies will be done at the beginning of university‘s academic year in consultation with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. A full time student (defined as taking full load of between 6 and 8 courses per semester) will be expected to complete the programme in eight semesters excluding four months of field attachment. A part-time student (defined as taking 4-5 courses for the semester in the duration of the programme) will be expected to complete the programme in twelve semesters including four months of field attachment.The curriculum offers a varied, yet focused, choice of subjects through which students will be able to develop their interests within specialized fields of criminology and security studies. In the first three years, students are introduced and exposed to all areas of Criminology and Security Studies, and related disciplines. They proceed to a job attachment/practicum in the second semester of the third year in relevant organizations. It is in the fourth year that the students make a choice to pursue a specialized area of their choice. This is structured into three areas of specialization with respectiveobjectives:
