BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (SCIENCE)

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Diploma in Education (Arts) secondary option is tailored towards preparing students to teach Arts and Humanities at secondary school level. The Programme  puts into consideration the requirements of the current secondary school curriculum thus being practical in nature. The graduand of the Programme  will obtain a Diploma in Education (Arts) secondary option of Chuka University.

By the end of the Programme  the learner will be able to:

  • Apply acquired knowledge, skills and positive attitudes of educational management
  • Effectively manage resources at their disposal
  • Carry out research on issues arising from their educational practice
  • Apply knowledge, skills and attitudes to influence educational policy, Programme s and general development of educational institutions. Contribute positively to the larger issues of educational policy and practice.

Candidates admitted to the Degree of Bachelor of Education (Science) must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements of Chuka University. They must also satisfy departmental requirements before registering for courses in the respective departments. In satisfying the minimum entry requirements of the University, candidates must have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum mean grade of C+ (Plus) and at least C (Plain) in mathematics. Candidate must also have a minimum of C+ (plus) grade in two of their teaching subjects which include: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geography, OR B- in any of the following subjects: Physical Sciences or Biological sciences. Alternatively, admission may be granted to holders of Diploma/S1 certificate in science education from institutions recognized by Chuka University Senate provided the diplomas are at credits and above.

 

The Programme  shall take four years to complete. Each academic year consists of two semesters. In addition, students shall take 12 weeks of Teaching Practice during which they shall also carry out a learning resource project in one of their teaching subjects. The minimum CFs for the Programme  shall be 120 CFs. The Bachelor of Education (Science) Programme  draws its academic subjects from many Faculties. Students may take two teaching subjects from the following areas: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology (Botany/Zoology), or Geography. Professional courses offered for the Programme  include: Educational Foundations; Educational Administration, Planning and Economics; Educational Psychology and Counselling, and Curriculum and Instruction. The Programme  will be offered in fulltime, school-based, ODEL and blended approaches.

Full Time  Ksh – 68,500 per Semester
