BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MATHEMATICS

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Bachelor of Science Mathematics is a programme whereby a student is enrolled in a mathematics program from the first day, as opposed to a generalist science degree. Mathematics teaches one to think logically and approach problems in analytical and creative ways. This program also focuses on applying mathematics to real-world problems to enhance ones employment prospects. The programme provides three main areas of specialization: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.

Successful completion of the programme provides qualifications which enables the mathematics graduate to:

  • Apply mathematical concepts and principles to perform computations.
  • Apply mathematics to solve problems
  • Create, use and analyze graphical representations of mathematical relationships
  • Communicate mathematical knowledge and understanding
  • Apply technology tools to solve problems
  • Perform abstract mathematical reasoning

A student wishing to study B.Sc. Mathematics must satisfy the minimum University entry requirements. In addition, a student must have attained at least B (plain) grade in Mathematics and a C+ (plus) in English or Kiswahili at K.C.S.E.  OR Two principal passes in (Math/Physics, (Math/Chem, (Math/Geog, (Math/ Econ. in IGCE/GCE or KACE. OR A diploma in Education with at least a credit pass, with Mathematics as a major subject from an institution recognized by University Academic Board. OR Those  holding  qualifications  equivalent  to  the  above  from  institutions  recognized  by University Academic Board.

The duration of the programme shall normally be a period of four academic years or 8 semesters. A candidate must take and pass at least one hundred and twenty (120) Credit Factors of the programme to qualify for the conferment of the degree. A full-time student shall normally register for and take fifteen to thirty (15-30) Credit Factors of Courses per semester.

Online Learining (Odel) – Ksh – 54,500 per Semester
