The diversity of life and how living organisms relate to their environment is the solid foundation of biological sciences. Careers in biological sciences are intensely rewarding and there are numerous opportunities available to those with a hunger to understand how living things work and interact with the natural world. The Bachelor of Science in Biology of Tharaka University envisages learning that promotes critical thinking, information utilization, collaboration, communication, and analytical skills essential to effective and efficient work productivity. The foundational principles of biology will help learners to gain proficiency in techniques and practical applications of modern field and laboratory biology. They will also develop the ability to conduct scientific studies of biological systems and present findings in scientific formats. It is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the life sciences and the environment. The program therefore proposes focused studies designed to provide an interdisciplinary component that will increase the student’s breadth of learning. The curriculum includes topics in plant sciences such as ecological fundamentals, the environment and society, plant physiology, plant pathology and genetics. It also encompasses topics in zoology such as animal behaviour, parasitology and animal physiology.

All candidates admitted to the degree programme of Bachelor of Science in Biology must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements stipulated in the common university entrance regulations. In addition, candidates MUST have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with minimum grades as follows: Biology B- or Biological Science B, Chemistry B- or Physical Science B, English and Mathematics C+ and Geography or Agriculture B-. Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by Tharaka University Senate may also be admitted. Admission may be offered to outstanding diploma holders in Biological Sciences passed with a credit or above or their equivalent. Such cases will be treated on individual merit. Transfer of up to 30% Credit Factors from a diploma or equivalent programme may be allowed as stipulated in the Tharaka University Statutes.
The Bachelor of Science degree in Biology shall take a full time student four academic years each with two 17-week semesters and eight years for part time students. Each semester will comprise fifteen (15) weeks of teaching and two (2) weeks of examination. During each semester, full time students will register for a minimum of 18 CF per semester and part-time students for 9 CF. Each 3.0 CF course will take a minimum of 45 contact hours per semester and will be examined for two hours. This curriculum introduces students to theory, concepts, methodologies and techniques in a wide range of courses in Microbiology and Biotechnology. Teaching Methodologies include face to face lectures, class discussion and group work, power-point presentations, laboratory demonstrations and practical exercises through full-time or part-time modes.
