One of the greatest problems the world is faced with today is that of providing food for its human population that is steadily increasing and constantly creating a food deficit. This is true for our nation as well. In particular, the provision of protein to human diet is crucial for good health and development that translates into a healthy human resource. Good health is necessary for the optimization of human productivity hence improved economic development. There is thus need for every nation to endeavour to develop highly qualified personnel with the relevant knowledge and skills to contribute towards the achievement of food sufficiency. The need to develop curricula that will help learners to acquire such knowledge and skills cannot be overemphasized.
The B.Sc. in Fisheries and Aquaculture programme is designed to offer broad based knowledge and skills to meet the needs of an expanding fisheries and aquaculture industry especially in this nation. It is designed with a view to providing students with the most modern knowledge and techniques in the fisheries and aquaculture industry as well as equipping them with sustainable managerial and conservation capabilities for a successful career.

All candidates admitted to the degree programme of Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Aquiculture must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements stipulated in the Tharaka University Statutes. In addition, candidates MUST have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade indicated in each of the following subjects: Biology C+ or Biological Science B, Chemistry C+ or Physical Science B-, Mathematics C+. Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by Tharaka University Senate may also be admitted. Admission may be offered to outstanding diploma holders in Biological Sciences passed with a credit or above or their equivalent. Such cases will be treated on individual merit. Transfer of credit factors from the diploma programmes or their equivalent may be considered and in such a case a credit transfer a maximum of 30% of the curricula will be allowed for those who qualify based on the guidelines stipulated by the Senate.
The B.Sc. in Fisheries and Aquaculture programme extends over four academic years. Every academic year consists of two semesters. There is, therefore, a total of 8 semesters during the four-year academic years. The weighting of courses is in terms of semester units where a semester unit is equivalent to 45 lecture hours. The B.Sc. in Fisheries and Aquaculture requires the student to complete a minimum of 56 courses inclusive of elective courses which are offered only in the third and fourth years of study. The electives are aimed at enabling the student to specialize in a particular area. The specialization area selected and the related electives must be adhered to throughout the two-year period. This curriculum introduces students to theory, concepts, methodologies and techniques in a wide range of courses related to fisheries and aquaculture. Teaching methodologies include face to face lectures, class discussion and group work, power-point presentations, loboratory demonstrations and practical exercises and lessons.
