Statistics is a discipline that is fundamental in decision making and policy formulation. The programme focuses on statistical science and its application to real life problems. Statistical techniques and methodologies including collecting, comparison and designing of experiments, analysis of data are handled. Since Statistics is increasingly the epitome of research support in many fields such as engineering, business, physical, biological, biomedical, agricultural and socio-economic sciences, the establishment of this programme is therefore of great importance.
Successful completion of the programme provides qualifications which enables the graduate to:
Work with scientists, engineers or economists to solve complex and practical problems with modern mathematical methods.
Use modern mathematical techniques and modify appropriate methods.
When necessary develop new mathematical models, supported by his broad general knowledge.
Pursue postgraduate studies in mathematics.
A student wishing to study B.Sc. in Applied Statistics must satisfy the minimum University entry requirements. In addition, a student must have attained at least B- (minus) grade in Mathematics and a C+ in English or Kiswahili at K.C.S.E. OR Two principal passes in (Math/Phys, (Math/Chem, (Math/Geog, (Math/Econ. in IGCE/GCE or KACE. OR Diploma in Statistics with at least a credit pass from an institution recognized by the Academic Board. OR Diploma in Education with at least a credit pass, with Mathematics as a major subject from an institution recognized by University Academic Board. OR Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by the Academic Board.
The duration of the programme shall normally be a period of four academic years or 8 semesters. Each student shall be required to undertake a practical attachment for a period of not less than 8 weeks at the end of the third year. A candidate must take and pass at least one hundred and twenty (120) Credit Factors of the programme to qualify for the conferment of the degree. A full-time student shall normally register for and take fifteen to thirty (15-30) Credit Factors of Courses per semester. Student centered approach shall be used with emphasis on laboratory computing, seminars and industrial tours, problem-solving from business world, project work and research.
