BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BIOCHEMISTRY

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to describe the living world in terms of its cellular and molecular structures and transformations thereof. It deals with animals, plants and microbes both in health and disease states and their interactions at molecular level. Against this background, new aspects of the subject such as Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Immunology and Medical Biochemistry are introduced. These in turn offers avenues into Biochemical and Biomedical Sciences in general.

At the end of the programme, the students will be expected to: Apply acquired necessary theoretical and practical skills in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in gainful self-employment such as consultancy and provide the skilled manpower required by Biochemical and Agro-based research and development institutions and Industry; hence contributing to national  economic growth.

To be eligible for admission, candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as set out by Tharaka University  Statutes. In addition, candidates must have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent with a minimum grade as follows: Biology B or Biological Science B, Chemistry B (Physical Science B/Physics  C+/ Mathematic C+). Alternatively, candidates with the following minimum A level passes will be considered- Principal pass in each of the following subjects: Chemistry; Physics; Biology; Mathematics. Have any other qualifications accepted by Tharaka University Academic Board as equivalent.

The programme shall extend over a duration of four academic years each consisting of two semesters of 15 weeks of teaching and 2 weeks of examination. Students must take all scheduled courses in a given Semester and appear for all examinations. A candidate must take and pass at least one hundred and twenty (120) Credit Factors of the programme to qualify for the conferment of the degree. A full-time student shall normally register for and take fifteen to twenty four (15-24) Credit Factors of Courses per semester.

Online Learining (Odel) – Ksh – 54,500 per Semester
