CERTIFICATE IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The frequency and changing forms of disasters require adequate capacity to respond to them effectively. The Certificate in Disaster Management will sensitize as well as enable learners to develop sustainable capacities to respond, mitigate, prevent and effectively manage disasters. The program will also form a starting point for high school graduates who do not qualify for diploma yet wish to pursue further studies in Disaster Management.

After the end of this programme, students able to:

  • Exhibit requisite knowledge in nature and impact of various disasters on communities.
  • Demonstrate basic skills in mitigation, prevention and preparedness in coping with disasters in communities.
  • Conceptualize different approaches to disaster management.
  • Assume some leadership roles in responding to the multifaceted demands of disaster emergencies.

To qualify for admission a candidate must have obtained a mean grade of at least D+ (plus) at KCSE level or equivalent qualifications. Candidates who hold any relevant certificate are eligible for the Certificate in Disaster Management.

The Certificate in Disaster Management shall be covered in one (1) academic year of three (3) semesters of 15 weeks each. To fulfill the graduation requirements of the Certificate in Disaster Management, candidates must successfully complete 60 credit factors (C.F’s).

The certificate programme will be on full time or Part time mode.

Full Time  Ksh-30,000/=/semester

Applications should be on official forms available at Tharaka University  in Gatunga; Non-refundable fee of KES 2,000 for postgraduate courses degree, and diploma programmes and KES 1,000 for certificate courses to be deposited in the following accounts:
