DIPLOMA IN ACCOUNTING

COURSE INTRODUCTION

This programme offers a wide range of knowledge and skills to learners, which is necessary for them to respond to various issues in accounting field, in particular in the management of resources within the organization. It is two academic year programme with four semesters.

By the end of the training the learner is expected to:

  • Maintain proper accounting records.
  • Prepare financial statements.
  • Interpret financial statements for effective decisions.
  • Prepare learners for further studies in accounting and business related field.

 

The common University admission criterion is applicable. In addition the candidate must have obtained at least a mean grade of C (plain) at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) level or Division III at Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) or equivalent qualification. The candidate must have also obtained at least a C- (Minus) in mathematics and at least a C- (Minus) in English or Kiswahili. Or KCE Division three with credit in English and Mathematics. Candidates with mean grades of C (Plain) but have less than C-(Minus) in mathematics and English or Kiswahili can be admitted after bridging in the respective subjects at Tharaka University or institutions recognized by Tharaka University Senate. Candidates with at least a credit in certificate in Business from Institutions recognized by the Tharaka University Senate, and having a mean grade of D+ (Plus) or equivalent in their K.C.S.E, and having at least C- in Mathematics, are also eligible for admission. Holders of accounting technicians Certificate (ATC) final level are also eligible for admission.

The duration of the course is two (2) years academic proramme comprising of four (4) semesters. In order to fulfill the graduation requirements for Diploma in Accounting, candidates are required to take and pass all 93 credit factors (C.Fs) of courses approved by the Senate.
