DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) continues to change rapidly, creating new opportunities and challenges. The discipline is relatively new and areas formally thought not possible to apply computer technology continue to provide new opportunities. These two issues create insatiable global demand for human resource to work in Information and Communication Technology industry. To meet the current demand, improvements on old technology continue to occur and new areas of application are constantly discovered. These provide the following challenges: The need for a dynamic curriculum that adopts to new technology; High demand for qualified computer science and ICT professionals; Coping with the current fast growing technological trends among other challenges. Whereas various efforts have been made to address these problems, there is still a challenge of up to date and relevant curriculum at diploma level to meet the challenges mentioned in (i) above. The Department of Computer Sciences has taken these problems as a challenge and reviewed the existing curriculum which integrates academic and professional training. The scope of the programme is wide and adequate for the degree level.

Students who successfully completes the course will be able to;

  • Work as User Support Professionals, Network Administrators, Web Masters or Programmers.
  • Identify and apply software and hardware tools effectively.

Candidates must meet the Minimum University general admission criteria as stipulated in the statutes and passed the K.C.S.E, or equivalent examination with the following minimum grades to be considered. Mean grade C at K.C.S.E plus C in (Math, C in Physics or Physical Sciences, C in either Kiswahili or English. OR O-level certificate with Division 3 with a credit pass in physics/physical sciences, Math and Kiswahili. OR A-level certificate with a subsidiary pass in math’s or physics pass in Mathematics and At least a credit pass in Physics/Physical Sciences at Ordinary level. OR Certificate in Computer Science or equivalent recognized by the Tharaka University College Academic Board. In addition, one must have done and passed physics at K.C.S.E or any other level.

The programme will take two academic years. In the first semester of study, the student studies a mixture of computer science courses together with courses in other disciplines such as communication skills, mathematics and HIV/AIDS and life skills. In Y1S2 and Y2 of study, the student is able to tackle more courses in Computer Science and selected courses in physics. There will be a compulsory course offered in Y2S2 that would cover emerging technologies in computer science. This will enable the student to be up to date with the technological changes in the discipline areas. To successfully complete the course, the student must take a three months industrial placement at the end of Y2S2. The mode of delivery will be either part-time or full-time; and teaching methods shall include lectures, discussions, practical sessions, print based media and online
