DIPLOMA IN HEALTH RECORDS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The high incidence and prevalence of preventable diseases and emergence of new diseases and the need for proper record keeping places a heavy demand on the existing training institutions. Recent advances in I.C.T calls for a need to revise our training to relevant to today’s market to facilitate the exchange of health information in conditions directly related to electronic environment while ensuring confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information.

Tharaka University College recognizes the need for producing highly skilled versatile Health Records Officers who will provide Kenyans with the much needed quality health care services

Upon successful completion of the programme, a graduate should be able to:

  1. Appropriately manage and use health data.
  2. Collect, report, interpret database information, and compute related healthcare statistics.
  • Utilize technology, including specialized hardware and software applications to ensure accurate data collection, record tracking, and analysis, reporting.
  1. Maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive health information.
  2. Acquire knowledge and entry-level competencies as demonstrated by the ability to analyse medical record documentation.

To be eligible for admission for the diploma programme in Health Records and Information Management, a candidate must satisfy the minimum university entry requirements stipulated in the common university entrance requirement regulations of C (plain) and above. Candidates must have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with minimum grade indicated in each of the following subjects: Mathematics/Physics/Computer C-(minus), Biology/Biological sciences C-, and English/Kiswahili C. Holders of certificate qualifications in Health Records and Information Management may also be considered. Any other qualification that the senate may deem equivalent to the above qualifications will be considered.

The duration of the course is two (2) years academic proramme comprising of four (4) semesters. In order to fulfill the graduation requirements for Diploma inHealth Records And Information Technology, candidates are required to take and pass all 93 credit factors (C.Fs) of courses approved by the Senate.
