DIPLOMA IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION STUDIES

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The objective of this programme is to offer education and training in Information Sciences. The programme prepares the candidates to function as an information technologist. The information technologist is normally skilled in the art of information collection, analyzing, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination. The graduates of this programme shall thus in the first instance be equipped with the skills to understand and accurately interpret information systems and services. Because the special strength of the graduate from this programme is to be a ‘hands-on’ person, considerable emphasis is placed on giving the candidate considerable practical knowledge in information sciences. Considerable emphasis has been placed on giving the student strong technical skills. The programme includes substantial coverage of basic as well as social sciences. Considerable time that has been allocated to practical work.

By the end of the programme, the students should be able to:

Acquire appropriate professional skills and knowledge in leadership and integrity in the management of public affairs.

Appreciate the role of leadership in the county, national and global development.

Apply the principles of effective leadership in the administration and management of various sectors in the country.

Integrate values of integrity in the leadership at various levels and sectors, in the country and beyond.

Apply necessary leadership skills to effectively solve and address various issues affecting the lives of people in the country and beyond.

 Candidates must have obtained a minimum mean grade of C (plain) at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent. In addition, candidates must have obtained C (plain) in any of the subjects in humanities at KCSE or its equivalent. Admission is also open to holders of a KNEC Certificate in Archives and Library Science or other related courses from institutions recognized by Tharaka University College.

The Diploma in information resources will be covered in two academic years. Students must go through fieldwork attachment which will be supervised by members of academic staff. The student will be required to write a field report which will be graded out of 100 marks. To graduate, a student must successfully complete a minimum of 95 Credit Factors. Credit factors shall consist of both information sciences courses, from other disciplines and field attachment. The programme will be conducted through lectures, academic visits and field attachment. The Diploma may be offered on full-time and part-time basis.
