The Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics programme is designed to enable its students to master a significant body of mathematics, including a specialty in applied mathematics; to relate this knowledge to a coherent area of science or engineering; and to carry on fundamental research in applied mathematics at a nationally competitive level. Recipients of this degree will, according to their abilities and choice of sub-specialty, be able to work effectively in a research and development environment involving mathematical or statistical analysis and modeling in business, government or industry; to teach mathematics at the college or university level; or to carry on fundamental research in their area of specialty.
In addition to fulfilling the common university regulations, an applicant for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics should satisfy the following requirements. Must be a holder of Masters Degree from Tharaka University or any other University recognized by the Senate in area of Applied Mathematics. The programme shall be Coursework and thesis based:- Course work will take one academic year (two semesters) followed by research, thesis writing and defence. Students will be required to register for and pass all core and elective courses with a loading of a minimum of 45 CFs before graduation.
(a) The Doctorate programme shall be conducted through coursework, research, thesis and oral examinations and sometimes postgraduate courses may be recommended to strengthen the candidate in specialised area of choice.
(b) Candidates may register for full-time or part-time doctorate programme. Full-time programme shall run for a minimum of 36 consecutive months and a period not exceeding 60 consecutive months, unless with prior approved deferment. Part-time programme shall run for a period not exceeding 84 consecutive months, unless with prior approved deferment.
(c) A candidate may be discontinued on failure to demonstrate positive progress for two consecutive reporting quarters unless with prior approved deferment.
(d) The programme requires a minimum of fourty-five (45) CFs of coursework and thesis. A student may take extra courses over and above the required number of units. A student may choose courses subject to the approval of the department. A candidate for this programme may be exempted from part or whole of coursework requirement provided the senate is satisfied that the candidate had done and passed at Masters level course(s) equivalent to the prescribed course(s).
