DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

COURSE INTRODUCTION

IntroductionThe doctoral curriculum in Counselling Psychology builds on the theoretical and practical foundations established during the master‘s program training. The degree program focuses on development of advanced research, theoretical and practical knowledge and skills among graduates in counselling psychology. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for future careers in Counselling Psychology as researchers, educators, and practitioners across settings, including education institutions, clinical set ups, government agencies, social services, , community agencies, business , industry, and private practice.

By the end of this programmes, graduates should be able to:

  • Demonstrate capacity in academic and critical thinking to address issues related to physical, economic, technical, social, and psychological transformation of the community.

  • Apply knowledge and skills in identifying, analyzing and interpreting issues in community development. Undertake the process of identifying, planning, and managing community development projects.

  • Possess capacity to incorporate information technology in resource allocation, networking and community development programmes.

  • Intergrate theory and practice of research in community development.

Admission into the PhD in Community Development is extended to students with a Master‘s degree in community development or any other relevant master‘s degree in social sciences. The regulations for the admission to the PhD Programme as specified in the Tharaka University Statutes shall apply.

Full-time candidates for the PhD degree shall be registers for a minimum of thirty-six (36) months or three academic years. Candidates must successfully complete coursework before commencing on thesis writing. Any extension of the duration for study beyond three years should be approved by the senate. The PhD in Community Development degree shall have one option: Community Development. The programme shall be undertaken by Coursework, Examinations and Thesis. The coursework shall constitute a minimum of 30 CFs. Thesis will constitute 15 CFs.

Full Time  Ksh-215,000/= per year
