DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction degree provides a theoretical and practical course of study in curriculum and instruction. The program is designed for teachers, curriculum coordinators, college instructors, corporate and agency curriculum planners, academics, and other professional educators. The program enables students to develop a theoretical and conceptual framework for studying teaching and learning, and also encourages professional educators to develop knowledge and practice in their own fields of specialization. The Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction establishes a link between research and practice, providing opportunities to investigate curriculum, instruction, assessment, and social justice issues within education context.  Ph.D. students engage in rigorous research, quality teaching, and contextual service to enhance education, curriculum and instruction, and community connections.

By the end of this Programme the learner should be able to:

  • Demonstrate competency in the theoretical understanding of curriculum as it relates to design and policy.
  • Teach, Plan, design, implement and evaluate curricula at all levels
  • Understand and use both quantitative and qualitative research methods and procedures
  • Understanding of the research processes within the field of curriculum and instruction, including practical design, analysis and reporting
  • Integrate critical thinking and problem –solving strategies in education

Admission shall be offered to: Holders of M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction degree from Tharaka University College or any other institution recognized by the Academic Board. Applicants for the Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education shall be required to present a research proposal acceptable to the Department of Education.

Full-time students shall take a minimum period of 36 months and a maximum of 48 months to complete this Programme. The Programme will consist of course work, examinations and thesis. The candidates will spend the one and half years doing course work and examinations and do thesis research in the second and third year. The course work and thesis shall constitute of 36 and 15 CFs, respectively. All students will be required to take 12 compulsory courses. The Doctor of Philosophy Programme in Curriculum and Instruction will be offered on full time basis only. However, the department with consultation and approval of the Senate can offer the Programme through part-time, distance learning, e-learning and blended modes. The Programme shall be conducted by course work research and thesis.

Full Time  Ksh-215,000/= per year
