DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN GEOGRAPHY

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The PhD programme in Geography is designed to respond to the pressing and emerging challenges affecting the environment and the society in the 21st century in Kenya and the world at large. The programme seeks to equip individuals with skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to initiate and manage environmental resources in a sustainable way. Prudent use and management of natural and human resources are important prerequisites for sustainable development. Sustainable improvement in the quality of life for all people begins with proper utilization and management of natural resources. These are aspects that require well trained human resource.

  • By the end of this programme, the graduate is expected to: Demonstrate expert supervision, training and research skills;
  • Demonstrate interdisciplinary perspectives focusing on environmental development theories and practice;
  • Take cognizance of the intricate relationship between human beings and the environment; Apply the knowledge and skills in resource conservation and management6

Admission into the PhD in Geography is extended to students with a Master‘s in Geography degree or any other relevant master‘s in social sciences degree. The regulations for the admission to the PhD Programme as specified in the Tharaka University statutes shall apply.

 

The Doctor of Philosophy in Literature will take three years to complete: In the first year, the candidates will pursue coursework, while in the second and third years the candidates will research and write theses. The candidate is expected to complete thesis writing in the third year of study. The programme consists of ten

(10) units of coursework units and a thesis. To be awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Literature of Tharaka University, a candidate must successfully complete a total of fourty-five (45) Credit Factors. Of these, thirty (30) shall be taught Credit Factors (CFs) and a Research Thesis with an equivalent of fifteen (15 CFs). Each course will comprise 45 contact hours and examined at the end of the semester by a 3 hourexamination. In addition to the unit requirements, each candidate shall make an oral presentation of his/her thesis proposal at the beginning of year 2. Each candidate shall present two seminar papers at the departmental level during the course of his/her research. Each candidate shall defend his/her Ph. D. thesis at the departmental level before submitting it to the Graduate School. Each candidate shall have a public presentation (colloquium) of his/her findings prior to graduation. The Programme may be taken either on full-time or part-time basis. A fulltime candidate for Doctor of Philosophy in Literature degree shall be registered for a minimum of three academic years. A part-time candidate for Doctor of Philosophy in Literature shall complete the programme in a minimum period of four academic years. A part-time candidate

shall be allowed to take a minimum of 6 CFs and a maximum of 9 CFs per semester. There will be no Course credit transfer to Doctor of Philosophy in Literature programme.

Full Time  Ksh-215,000/= per year
