DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN LINGUISTICS

COURSE INTRODUCTION

PhD in Linguistics is an advanced programme aimed offering students an opportunity to analyze language using various theoretical perspectives and advance their knowledge. The students, who will have a masters degree in English and linguistics will be exposed to theories and scientific concepts of the structure of English and other languages in structural units which will form the basis upon which other areas of language are understood. The other areas include the science behind language acquisition, the mechanisms involvedin production of language (phonetics and phonology), the relationship between language and society, semantics and pragmatics. A unit in general and linguistic research is also offered to enable the learners to undertake research inlinguistics.

  • By the end of this training, the graduateis expected to:  Analyse language from a variety of linguisticperspectives.
  • Use language appropriately in a variety of appliedcontexts
  • Conduct linguistic research conforming to the appropriate level of technical details

The common regulations for PhD admission in the University shall apply. Candidates must hold a Masters degree in Linguistics from Tharaka University or any other institution recognized by Tharaka University Senate.

 

The PhD in Linguistics shall extend over at least 36 months but not longer than 60 months. During the first year of study, all the candidates will take a total of ten courses, five in the first semester and five in the second semester. The coursework will be examined and will comprise 30 CFs. From the second year,candidates will undertake research leading to the write up of a thesis. The Research topic will be on an approved area within linguistics. The Thesis will be equivalent to 15 CFs.

Full Time  Ksh-215,000/= per year
