MASTER OF ARTS IN HISTORY

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The present trend in historical studies is towards the appreciation of the human past in all its totality and complexity. A proper understanding of this common past should be a major element contributing to amity among peoples. In the context of the nation, the existence of a shared historical consciousness is a key factor in promoting cohesion and patriotism. The building up of a corpus of knowledge necessary for inculcating and perpetuating such a consciousness ultimately hinges upon the results of scholarly research in History and related disciplines.

 

  • Upon completion of the Master of Arts in History degree, it is expected that the learner will be able to: Portray broad and balanced knowledge of the human past.
  • Debate and provide critical analysis of key trends, theories and methods in the History discipline. Conduct historical research, present data and disseminate knowledge.

Applicant must hold at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree from Tharaka University or equivalent qualification from a recognized and accredited institution. The applicant must have specifically studied History at the undergraduate level and obtained Second Class Honours (Upper division) or Second Class Honours (Lower division) with 2 years of experience, and a minimum of 48 CFS in the History subject. In exceptional cases, non-holders of Upper Class Honours may be admitted to the programme provided that such applicants can demonstrate ability to do historical research as evidenced by publications, manuscripts, etc.

The Master of Arts programme shall extend for a period of at least 2 years but not more than thirty-six (36) months for full-time students. Students taking the programme on a part-time basis should complete it in a period not exceeding forty-eight (48) months. The Master of Arts degree in History will be taken by coursework, examination and thesis. The coursework and thesis shall constitute at least thirty (30) and fifteen

(15)CreditFactors,respectively.ThecourseworkandexaminationsshallbedoneandcompletedintheFirst Year of study and the thesis written during the Second Year. The Master of Arts History programme shall be offered both in full-time and part-time mode. Lectures, discussions, seminar presentations, research shall be the methods ofdelivery.
