MASTER OF EDUCATION IN CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The professional education degree leading to Master of Education (Curriculum and Instruction) of Tharaka University College is designed to prepare graduates who can assist in preparing secondary or higher education school teachers, administrators and developers. The degree is designed to meet individual needs of students who seek practical and theoretical knowledge for work in the secondary or higher institutions. The Programme provides a basis for analysis and evaluation of educational theory, practices and policy within the intellectual and empirical contents of education.

At the end of this Programme the learner should be able to:

  • Do an analysis of selected problems and trends in secondary school education and their influence on school curriculum and procedures.

  • Apply the in-depth knowledge on curriculum development process that can be useful in curriculum review.

  • Apply the different models and theories in curriculum development process.

Admission shall be offered to: Holders of B.Ed. degree with at least a second class honors upper division from Tharaka University College or any other institution recognized by the Academic Board. OR Holders of B.Ed. degree with at least second class honors lower division from Tharaka University College or any other institution recognized by the Academic Board provided they have a minimum of 2 years’ work experience. OR Holders of B.Sc. or B.A. general degree with at least upper second-class honors with Postgraduate Diploma in Education from an institution recognized by the Academic Board.

Full-time students shall take a minimum period of 18 months and a maximum of 36 months to complete this Programme. Part-time students shall take a minimum of 30 months and a maximum of 48 months. The Programme will consist of course work, examinations and thesis. The candidates will spend the first year doing course work and examinations and do thesis research in the second year. The course work and thesis shall constitute of 39 and 15 CFs, respectively. All students will be required to take 9 compulsory courses and a minimum of 4 elective courses.

Full Time  Ksh-120,000/= per year
