MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BIOCHEMISTRY

COURSE INTRODUCTION

This is an advanced training in Biochemistry and molecular biology. Masters in Biochemistry is designed to develop an awareness of application of the vast emerging knowledge in biochemistry and biotechnology. It employs a multidisciplinary approach from the physical and biological sciences to offer fundamental knowledge, practical and manipulative skills in biochemical, biomedical, pharmaceutical sciences and biotechnology. These applications are relevant to a broad range of career opportunities in diagnostic and biotechnology laboratories, research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and other health institutions, government chemists, forensic and toxicology laboratories and food industries.

The graduate will be able to use acquired knowledge and skills and attitudes to:-

  • Undertake scientific research and work effectively and productively within a team.
  • Communicate scientific information/ research findings in both written and spoken form.
  • Apply the acquired scientific knowledge and skills in institutions of higher learning, industries and other related organizations.

To be eligible for admission, candidates must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as set out by Chuka University Statutes. Those eligible for registration will be holders of the following degree awards from recognized Universities. A candidate holding a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry or biochemistry combined with any other science subject or chemistry and any other related sciences. Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Bachelor of Science Biomedical Science and Technology and Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology. Other B.Sc. who in the opinion of the Department/Faculty are qualified may be admitted but must have more than 50% of their undergraduate courses in Biochemistry. A minimum of upper-second class honours degree or equivalent will be required. The Senate may also admit to the Master’s programme a holder of Second Class Honours (Lower Division), provided the candidate has two years’ work experience in a relevant field as above stated.

Duration of study will be in accordance with the University regulations. In the first year, the student will study biochemistry by course work and examination. The second year will be devoted to research in a specific area under the guidance of Senate approved supervisor(s) followed by the writing up of the thesis for submission and examination. The Masters Degree programme shall extend for a period of at least 18 months but not more than 36 months. The programme will be offered on a full-time basis.
