MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ECONOMICS

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Economics as a discipline applies economic theory and analytical tools to solve resource allocation and policy related problems affecting all sectors of the economy. This calls for the establishment of a Master of Science Degree in Economics that will focus on training students in the emerging economic issues.

On completion of this programme students should, among other things, be able to:

  • Apply economic concepts and techniques to analyze economic policy issues;
  • Undertake independent research in economics;
  • Communicate research results to stakeholders; and
  • Function professionally in different economic fields.
  • Pursue advanced study and careers in economics

The following shall be eligible for admission into the Masters programme in Economics: A holder of at least a Second Class Honour Upper Division Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Economics and Statistics, Economics and Sociology, Economics and Mathematics, Agricultural Economics or Economics and Finance and any other related programmes from Chuka University or any other recognized Institution. A holder of a Lower Second Class degree in the stated disciplines from Chuka University or any other recognized Institution with 2 years relevant experience.

 

The Masters programme will consist of coursework, examination and research project. The programme will be offered onpart-time and full-time modes. To be awarded an MSC Economics degree, a candidate must successfully complete fourty-eight (48) taught credit factors (CFs) and a research project which will be equivalent to nine (16) CFs. A project once started, must be completed within that semester. At the end of the programme a student will be required to have specialized in one of the following: Economics, Econometrics, Environmental Economics, Financial Economics, Development Economics, Health Economics, International Economics, Agricultural Economics. Candidates pursuing a Master of Science degree in Economics will be expected to take all core units that are offered in their particular areas of specialization in the first and second years of study. In the second year of study, candidates shall choose at least four (4) electives.

Full Time  Ksh-120,000/= per year science based
