MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MICROBIOLOGY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, being unicellular, multicellular and acellular. Microbial biotechnology is the manipulation of microorganisms at the genetic and molecular level to generate useful products. The programme of Master of Science in Botany (Microbiology and Biotechnology) of Tharaka University focuses on broadening learners knowledge and understanding of the current technologies and processes in the Micro-Biotech industry, including approaches being applied to further advance the discovery and design of new and highly innovative products. It also aims to provide industrially relevant expertise in bioprocess technology and the design and management of industrial products which are components of the economic pillar of the Kenya Government Vision 2030. This programme will therefore produce learners with demonstrable skills in product development within the biotech and agricultural industry. In addition, it will emphasise skills in experimental design, problem solving and interpretation of data. Learners will develop analytical and technical skills required for experimental research and/or the exploitation of scientific discovery in industry, depending their chosen project. In addition, learners will be able to identify and appropriately manage the professional, ethical and wider social aspects and also improve their communication skills, independent thinking and develop creative solutions to the problems of mankind.

At the completion of the training in Master of Science in Microbiology and Biotechnology the learner is expected to:

  • Be vastly knowledgeable about the connection between microbiology and biotechnology.
