MASTER OF SCIENCE IN OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics programme is designed to enable its students to master a significant body of mathematics, including a specialty in applied mathematics; to relate this knowledge to a coherent area of science or engineering; and to carry on fundamental research in applied mathematics at a nationally competitive level. Recipients of this degree will, according to their abilities and choice of sub-specialty, be able to work effectively in a research and development environment involving mathematical or statistical analysis and modeling in business, government or industry; to teach mathematics at the college or university level; or to carry on fundamental research in their area of specialty.

  • Equip graduates with advanced analytical skills in dynamical systems, mathematical biology, mathematical finance, signal and image processing, scientific computing and numerical analysis.
  • Provide graduates with skills to apply their expertise in professional careers that require the teaching of mathematics, the pursuit of mathematical or mathematics-based research, or problem solving by means of mathematical techniques and analytical thinking.

A holder of at least upper second class of a Bachelor of Commerce, Procurement and supplies Management, Agribusiness management, Cooperative Management and  Economics and business statistics degree OR a holder of a lower second class degree in a business or related area from a recognized university with at least two (2) years relevant work experience.

The programme of study for the degree consists of course work, examination and a research project. To be awarded MSOM degree, a candidate must successfully complete fifty-four (54) taught credit factors (CFs) and a research project which will be equivalent to nine (9) CFs. A project once started, must be completed within that semester. The eighteen (18) courses consist of twelve (12) core courses, four (4) specialization courses and two (2) electives from any area of study. Each course will comprise 45 contact hours and be examined at the end of the semester by a 3 hour examination. The mode of delivery shall be Fulltime, Part time, weekend, and school based, evening and ODEL. Full time candidate shall take (eighteen (18) CFs per semester. Part time candidate shall be allowed to take a minimum of 6 CFs and a maximum of eighteen (18) CFs per semester. A Part-time candidate will take a maximum of ten semesters (five academic years). Course units can only be taken after the necessary prerequisites have been successfully completed, where applicable. The minimum registration period will be two (2) academic years.

Full Time  Ksh-120,000/= per year science based
