MASTERS IN HOTEL MANAGEMENT

COURSE INTRODUCTION

Hospitality industry provides an important support function to other economic sectors thus multiplying national economic growth. The continued polarization of hospitality businesses, integration and the emerging competition threats demonstrate the urge to develop innovative management capacity through training. Changes in guests’ motivators, lifestyles and expenditures inform the need to enhance focused market development and hospitality product differentiation through strategic operational initiatives. Masters in Hotel Management (MIHM) programme links hospitality industry to the dynamic social economic and technological development while integrating management and operational issues.

At the end of this programme the students should be able to:

  • Describe the application of hospitality supply and consumption theories
  • Attain competence in managing communication and application of electronic systems in hospitality businesses
  • Integrate theories and practice through debates, seminars and off-site learning with industrial practitioners and the public sector
  • Conduct quality and independent research on hospitality internal and external environment Attain capacity to inform local and regional policy directions on hospitality trade

Applicants for the Masters in Hotel management shall be admitted if they meet the following qualifications: Be holders of 2nd class honors Upper division degrees or an equivalent qualification in Bachelor of Catering and Hotel Management or Hospitality Management, Bachelor in Tourism Management or Bsc. in Home economics from an University recognized by the Tharaka University Senate. OR Holders of second class honors lower division in the above degree programs with 2 years practical experience in hospitality industry.

The study shall take at least two academic years comprising of two semesters course work and one year research by thesis. The program comprises of 45 CFs. This will consist of Lecture and Practical hours, where 15 lecture hours contribute 1 CF while 30 practical hours contribute 1 CF depending on the course.

Full Time  Ksh-120,000/= per year science based
