POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION

COURSE INTRODUCTION

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is a one-calendar year Programme to prepare graduates who intend to teach in secondary schools but have not undergone any teacher training. A Postgraduate Diploma in Education is awarded to candidates who satisfactorily complete the one-year Programme as stipulated in the University College Regulations.

By the end of the Programme, the learner should be able to:

  • Apply acquired knowledge, skills and positive attitudes in educational issues
  • Design research in education and evaluate educational Programme s and projects
  • Demonstrate enhanced participation in educational decision-making
  • Apply knowledge, skills and attitudes to influence educational policy, Programme s and general development of educational institutions.
  • Contribute positively to the larger issues of educational policy and practice
  • Pursue advanced training in education in both professional and specialized subject areas

 

The Programme is open to students who have attained a Bachelor of Science degree or Bachelor of Arts degree or equivalent qualification with two teaching subjects from recognized institutions approved by the Senate. Except for classification of degrees, all other postgraduate admission requirements shall apply.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education Programme shall take a minimum of one year consisting of two semesters of course work, examination and project and one semester of supervised teaching practice in secondary schools or equivalent educational institutions. The candidates for Postgraduate Diploma in Education will take professional education core courses during the first semester of study. In the second semester, the candidates will study five professional educational core courses: special subject method courses and a research project. In addition, they will be allowed to select two additional courses. The research project report will be submitted to the Department of Education at the end of the third semester. Teaching practice will be done during the third session in approved secondary schools/equivalent educational institutions. The Programme will be offered in fulltime, school-based, ODEL and blended approaches
